Step 12: Carrying It Forward

Step 12 — Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Service. Changed by these steps, I carry the message to people who still suffer, and practice these principles everywhere I live.

The steps end by pointing at somebody else. Working with another person who's still struggling protects your own recovery like nothing else can — and 'practicing these principles in all our affairs' means the program follows you to work, home, and traffic. Service can be as small as stacking chairs or answering a late-night call. Nobody's too new to be useful.

What to read alongside Step 12

Big Book — Chapter 7 — Working With Others pages 89–103

How to carry it — and why it protects your own sobriety.

What working Step 12 looks like

These are the reflection questions 1more24 asks you at this step. The answers underneath are written examples — one person's, invented for this page.

Compare today-you with day-one-you. What specifically changed — habits, reactions, mornings, relationships?

Day one I couldn't sit still or make a phone call. This morning I was up before the alarm, and my daughter asked me something and I just answered it — no working out what she really wanted first. The mornings are the biggest change. I don't wake up doing damage control any more.

Who could use your help right now? Name one act of service you can do this week, however small.

The new bloke who's been standing outside the meeting the last two weeks without coming in. I'm going to go and stand out there with him on Tuesday. That's the whole plan.

Invented, not anyone's real writing — and it couldn't be. Every member's journal is encrypted with their own password, so this application cannot read a single word of it. Step 12 asks 1 more question once you're signed in.

Working Step 12, not just reading it

1more24 gives this step a private journal, reflection questions written for it, and a companion who knows where you are in the work. Everything you write is encrypted with your own password — nobody else can read it, not even us. Free and open to all.
